Struggling to get to sleep or staying asleep is a big problem many of us know too well.
A third of Britons currently suffer from insomnia, with many off us looking for techniques and methods to help us get to sleep each night.
So, understandably, the demand for solutions to our tossing and turning is high.
Some sufferers swear by weighted blankets, others give in to more carnal urges and find that sex is the best medicine to get them off… to sleep.
But now, there’s a new solution people are recommending.
Pink noise.
Apparently pink noise is similar to the white noise we’re all familiar with, but is more calming and softer in quality.
Think waves crashing, rain falling, or a train chugging along, and you’ve got pink noise.
Nelly Papalambros, PhD, of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, who has studied pink noise, explained the concept to Refinery29.
She said: Even though you’re asleep, and you’re not necessarily consciously aware of whats going on, your brain is still processing external information, and that’s to protect you.”
“When you’re listening to pink noise at a low volume, it creates a rhythmic response in the electrical activity of the neurons.”
In other words, it subconsciously relaxes the body during sleep.
Dr Papalambros recommends experimenting with the various pink noise recording loops available online or on apps to see what works for you.
