High blood pressure – the exotic fruit that’s ‘one of the best’ ways to avoid hypertension

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than a quarter of all adults in the UK. But, you could lower your risk of developing hypertension by eating more pomegranate, it’s been claimed.

High blood pressure – which is also known as hypertension – puts extra stress on blood vessels and vital organs.

The condition could lead to some deadly complications, including strokes and heart attacks.

It could be caused by eating an unhealthy diet, or by not doing enough exercise.

You could lower your chances of hypertension by adding more pomegranate to your diet.

Pomegranates could lower your risk of hypertension as they are rich in the antioxidants polyphenols, as well as vitamins C and D.

Drinking a title of 100ml of pomegranate juice everyday could reduce blood pressure by as much as five percent, scientists have claimed.

The juice may even lower the amount of ‘bad’ cholesterol in your body and improve arterial stiffness.

Pomegranate juice is one of the best ways to consume the fruit, but you could also try adding it to salads, according to nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer.

“Diet is one of the most effective natural remedies to lower a high blood pressure,” she wrote on her website, MyLowerBloodPressure.com.

“Pomegranates are one of the best dietary sources of antioxidant polyphenols, including a unique form known as punicalagin. They also supply vitamins C, E and carotenoids.

“Look for pomegranate juice drinks, or juice your own. Add pomegranate seeds to salads.

“Cutting a fruit in half and picking out the seeds to eat with a blunt pin is a relaxing, therapeutic activity.”

If pomegranates aren’t really your thing, you could also try eating more mango, she added.

Mango contains a number of nutrients that protect against high blood pressure, including potassium, vitamin C and vitamin E.

The fruit prohibits the effects of noradrenaline; a stress hormone that causes blood vessels to constrict.

Constricting blood vessels subsequently causes a small space for blood to travel around the body, which raises blood pressure.
