Sol de Janeiro's New Hair Mask Is a Smooth Operator

A year ago, Sol de Janeiro dove into the hair-care market with its Brazilian Joia Strengthening + Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner, leaving fans of the brand wondering when it would release a third product to make their wash days complete. Almost a year later, the brand is here to deliver with the newest addition to its hair-care range, the Triple Brazilian Butter Hair Repair Treatment.

The treatment includes a mix of three highly-moisturizing butters — cupuaçu, tucumã, and murumuru. "The essential fatty acids in all three of these butters have extremely low molecular weight, so they deliver significant deep-conditioning benefits and nutrition without weighing down hair fibers," says Haley Menkis, director of the brand's product innovation and marketing division.

OK, we know that sounds super-science-y and clinical. To really illustrate how the butters work together, Mona Gohara, a Connecticut-based board-certified dermatologist explains the wonders that this triumvirate can do for your hair. "Just like butter softens bread, in the right combo it can soften hair," she says. "Depositing hydrating fats can make your toast taste — and your hair look — good."

The treatment also contains Sol de Janeiro's signature Sol Seal Technology, plant-based keratin that is supposed to make your hair smoother. It also has the signature scent of the brand's Best of Beauty-winning Bum Bum Cream, which, as someone who likes her hair to smell good, I appreciated.

I whipped out the 238-milliliter jar the kind folks at Sol de Janeiro messengered me once it was time for wash day. After shampooing and conditioning with what I already had in my shower, I grabbed the tub of this stuff and went to work. The consistency is quite thick and sturdy. Possibly a little bit hard — if you turn the jar over, the product doesn't slip out. My hair was already relatively detangled before application, but when I put this in it helped get out the last few remaining snarls. I left it on my hair for about 20 minutes. When I washed it out, my hair felt stronger, and like it was smoothed down. My 3C/4A hair is naturally going to be a bit frizzy, but I did notice that this mask kind of depleted that frizz.

I then went on to style my hair as usual. I parted my damp hair in two, then used a bit of the Sienna Naturals Dew Magic Leave-in Conditioner on both sections. Before starting to braid, I raked in Afro Sheen's Crown Defining Curl Cream, then got to work creating two braided pigtails. I covered my hair with a satin scarf and let my hair dry in those braids over two days.

When I finally took out my hair, I noticed minimal frizz and a ton of definition. That, of course, was largely due to the curl definer I used, but I could tell there was less frizz than usual, especially near my roots, and I think that was because of the Sol de Janeiro treatment.

While I can't say that this treatment made my hair feel crazy soft, I can say that it really did a beautiful job smoothing out my hair strands. This is absolutely a treatment I would be inclined to use in super humid weather (when the likelihood of my hair fizzing up is at a 10) or when I want my twist-out or braid-out to be really defined.

Sol de Janeiro's Triple Brazilian Butter Hair Repair Treatment is available for $36 for 238 milliliters and $16 for 75 milliliters on the brand's website and sephora.com starting December 28, 2020. You can pick it up in Sephora stores January 1.
