A Fourth Egg Recall Has Been Announced Amid New Salmonella Fears

Yet another brand of eggs has been recalled due to a potential microbial Salmonella Enteritidis contamination.

Food Standards Australia issued the latest safety warning, advising consumers who were in possession of two varieties of Steve’s Fresh Farm Eggs to throw the products away or return them to their store of purchase for a refund.

The products that may be affected include:

  • Fresh Eggs From My Farm 12 Free Range Eggs 700g
  • Fresh Eggs From My Farm Cage Eggs 700g

Both varieties have the use-by date 6-5-2019 and have been available for sale at butchers and independent stores across NSW.

The outbreak is the fourth in as many weeks, which Dr Lisa Szabo, CEO of the NSW Food Authority, puts down to a cluster of interconnected egg farms.

“SE (Salmonella Enteritidis) is a particular strain of salmonella that we haven’t seen linked to NSW eggs before,” she said.

“Consumers can rest assured NSW has strong systems in place at all points along the food supply chain, from paddock to plate, to help reduce the risk of salmonella from eggs.”

Salmonella symptoms can take between six and 72 hours to develop after exposure to contaminated food. They can last between three and seven days and include fever, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, headache, stomach, cramps, nausea and vomiting. 

It’s important to note that these symptoms can be a lot worse in young children, pregnant women, older people and those who are immunocompromised.
