It’s no secret that many women experience some truly weird bodily side effects when they’re with child. We’re talking flakey toe nails, swelling of the nose and random facial hair (ah, the joys!). But this little-known symptom is next level gross – and The Handmaid’s Tale star Yvonne Strahovski knows it all too well.
Talking to The Project panel this week, the 35-year-old, who will welcome her first child in late September, shared all the vom-inducing details.
“There’s a lot of pregnancy symptoms that no one tells you about – which I’m sure all women are familiar with,” she began. “This is really gross but I had excessive saliva so I had to carry a spittoon (aka, a container to spit into that’s mostly used in wine tastings) around with me at all times, which is just horrendous.”
(For all those wondering, a spittoon is a basically a container you can spit into that’s commonly used in tea, coffee and wine tastings.)
Experts are pretty divided as to why the whole excess saliva thing can happen when we’re expecting, but according to What To Expect, it’s our body’s way of protecting the mouth, teeth and throat from stomach acid that’s often brought up during morning sickness.
Luckily for Yvonne, she hasn’t had to deal with nausea – but she did have a hard time hiding her pregnancy (and the rather unsavoury side effect) from her co-stars.
“My first trimester was episode nine through to the end of The Handmaid’s Tale,” she explained. “That’s why it got tricky. In the end I was just over hiding it so I just said, ‘you know what, I’m pregnant.’”
“People thought that I had the flu [or that] I was sick, they were scared to come near me.”
