To say that Skin Food has stood the test of time would be an understatement. The all-natural wonder, birthed by the beloved beauty and holistic brand Weleda, has been around since the 1920s — when the company was just getting started and far from the organic skin- and personal-care powerhouse that it is today in 2018.
My point? While yeah, I hoard the stuff like last year's Halloween candy, and no, I rarely leave home without it in hand, I am clearly not the only one with an affinity for the cure-all cream. I may be biased, but it wouldn't be a best-seller — one that's flown off shelves and healed skin afflictions for almost a century — if it weren't something to write home about. Skin Food is for everybody: Editors, bloggers, non-beauty-enthusiasts, skin experts, and makeup artists alike all sing its praises.
Now, nearly 100 years later, Weleda is making all of our wishes come true with the Skin Food Experience — a long-awaited expansion that will include three new Skin Food siblings inspired by the brand's firstborn. And, because it knows Allure's obsession runs deep, we were kindly given the exclusive on this exciting news to share with all of you.
Now for the specifics, my fellow Foodies. Weleda is well-aware of the fact that its original moisturizer didn't need fixing, which is why instead of choosing to revamp the formula, it created three follow-up products — a lightweight moisturizer, a lip balm, and a body butter — that will cater to an even broader range of customers. The best part? Each item still has the classic Skin Food feel because each product is comprised of the same super-soothing plants (rosemary, pansy, calendula, and chamomile) and feature similar base formulas of ingredients such as sunflower seed oil, lanolin, beeswax, and shea butter.
Here's what you need to know about each product in the new Skin Food line.
Skin Food Light
For those with oily or combination skin types, Skin Food Light will be a godsend. Unlike the original, which is ultra, ultra thick and emollient, this new rendition sinks into skin almost instantly and does so without sacrificing the calming and glow-giving abilities of its counterpart. A base of skin-protecting sunflower seed oils and shea butter make its consistency smooth and creamy — almost like butter, but in a non-greasy way — and it feels featherlight on the skin, making it perfect for those who find the first Skin Food too rich for them. That being said, it's an excellent option if you prefer a light moisturizer year-round, or if you're looking for something slightly less thick to slather on. As far as pricing goes, it's set to retail at $12 for one ounce and $19 for 2.5 ounces.
Skin Food Body Butter
Weleda knows that its fans aren't looking for a flimsy lotion when it comes to caring for their limbs, which is why it brought us its exquisite body butter so that our entire bods could revel in the Skin Food sensation (and just in time for winter). The luxe cream features the same thick, über-nourishing feel as the original, yet sets in faster and has a light, whipped texture that makes it sink into the skin seamlessly. In addition to the aforementioned base ingredients of beeswax, lanolin, and sunflower oils, this hydrator also contains cocoa butter for added comfort and a scent you won't be able to stop thinking about for long after you've slathered it on. Skin Food Body Butter will set you back $19 for a five-ounce jar.
Skin Food Lip Butter
How many times have you turned to the original Skin Food for your lips during a moment of desperation? If it's too many to count, we're right there with you. But now, Weleda has created this oh-so-lovely lip balm for us, which is not only beyond-cute but works like a charm, thanks to a calming blend of viola, chamomile, and calendula flowers. Rather than sinking in immediately and disappearing five minutes later as some balms do, Skin Food Lip Butter stays around for hours, leaving the lips looking and feeling plush and moisturized. Whether you're just looking for a luxurious everyday balm or need a next-level treatment that can take care of cracked, Sahara-desert-dry lips, this one will do just the trick. A tube of this balm will cost $7.
Before you break out your wallet, go ahead and mark your calendars and set your reminders — whatever it is you do — first, because these babies won't be available on weleda.com until November. That's just around the corner, though, so in the meantime, head to the brand's website where you'll find a very special Skin Food Experience landing page that will give you even more insight into this incredible collection.
