What is Movember and what are the rules? How to get involved

We are just over a week into November, and you may have noticed men have started developing some serious facial hair.

Every November, men across the country make the conscious decision not to shave – and in many cases it is because of an annual movement called Movember.

Movember is a charity event primarily aimed at men – but there are ways to take part for women too.

Here is everything you need to know about the charity movement.

  • Why No Nut November could actually be bad for your health

What is Movember?

Movember is a charity event which takes place every year, where people are encouraged to grow a moustache for a whole month.

The idea is that people who wouldn’t normally leave their facial hair to grow, will be sponsored to do so.

The movement is run by the Movember Foundation, which is a charity set up in 2003 to raise funds and awareness for men’s health.

Their particular areas of concern are prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

Since then they have funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world.

By 2030 the charity aims to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by the 25%.

Five million men and women, or “mo bros and mo sistas” have taken part to raise money since the charity was funded.

What are the rules of Movember?

Every person who takes part has to do a clean shave on October 31, and take a picture of it to prove it.

Then Mo Bros will spend the next 30 days growing and grooming their tache.

If you’re playing strictly by the rules, there are no beards allowed.

On November 30 you can take a photo of your effort, and share before and after pictures for the people who kindly sponsored you.

Here are the five Movember rules, from the charity website:

1. Once registered at movember.com each Mo Bro must begin the 1st of Movember with a clean shaven face.

2. For the entire month of Movember each Mo Bro must Grow and groom a moustache.

3. Don’t fake it. No beards, no goatees and no fake moustaches.

4. Use the power of the moustache to create conversation and raise funds for men’s health.

5. Each Mo Bro must conduct himself like a true gentleman.

How to get involved in the no-shave movement:

There are three things you can do to get involved: grow a moustache, commit to walking or running 60km over the month, or host an event to raise money.

Go to www.movember.com to sign up to the movement.

They also encourage you to use a moustache picture during the month to raise awareness.
