Man, 25, miraculously survived after a five-foot iron rod pierced his shoulder and came out of his arm

A man miraculously survived after a five-foot iron rod pierced his shoulder and came out of his right arm.

Kamal Prajapat, 25, was returning home from a wedding at around 12.15am last Friday when a loaded lorry hit his car in Ajmer, India, while attempting to overtake another vehicle.

Mr Prajapat, whose car was dragged a few metres down the road by the truck, was found heavily bleeding and writhing in pain five hours later by commuters.  

He was immediately rushed to Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital where a team of 10 doctors removed the rod in a three-hour operation.

The surgery was a success and Mr Prajapat is due to be discharged once his wounds have healed.

Five hours after the incident, surgery began to remove the rod, which lasted three hours

‘He lost a lot of blood’

Dr Shiv Kumar Bunkar, head of surgery at the hospital, said: ‘A 5ft long and 4ft wide iron rod angle had pierced through his shoulder and right arm. He had lost a lot of blood but he was conscious and was continuously talking.

‘We immediately formed a team comprising surgeons, anaesthesiologist and orthopedic surgeon.

‘The operation began at 3.00am and lasted for three hours. The patient was put up on ventilator after the surgery and is now stable.’

Although in a huge amount of pain, Mr Prajapat remained conscious and able to talk 

‘It was a horrific sight’ 

Mr Prajapat is under observation and will be discharged once his wounds completely heal.

His brother Sunil Kumar Prajapat said: ‘It is nothing but [a] miracle that he survived that horrific accident.

‘He had informed us when he left from the wedding at 11pm. We were waiting for him but after two hours we got a call from local police about the incident. We immediately rushed to the hospital.

‘It was a horrific sight. He was bleeding but he was conscious. The ambulance driver told me Kamal had been talking through the journey. He wasn’t nervous but he did cry from the pain.

‘I am thankful to doctors and God for saving my brother’s life.’

Mr Prajapat is now stable and will be discharged once his wounds have healed

Dr Shiv Kumar Bunkar, who performed the operation, immediately got to work on the patient
