Britain’s favourite choirmaster Gareth Malone, right, has an unexpected way of staying in shape: ice-skating. The 42-year-old, who lives in North London with wife Becky and daughter Esther, eight, and son Gilbert, five, is taking lessons at his local rink. He says: ‘It’s knackering, but it’s very much about having a strong core. Vegans are no better off than those who eat meat when it comes to gut health, US research has revealed. A study of more than 10,000 British, US and Australian citizens found those eating omnivorous diets (meat and plants) had the healthiest variety of gut bacteria.
A diverse range of bacteria in the gut is said to be vital for healthy immune function and protecting against conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. Research also shows that an abundance of healthy gut bacteria can more effectively absorb calories in food, keeping us trimmer. The researchers at the American Society of Microbiology found that those eating more than 30 different plant species and a moderate amount of meat, poultry and fish had the healthiest variety of gut bacteria.
