An international outbreak of bed bug infestations of homes and temporary lodging sites has occurred over the last decade. Unfortunately bedbugs are difficult to spot and even their bites are often mistaken for mosquito bites or bites from other insects. Some even show no reaction at all to bedbug bites. They are found mostly around the bed near the piping, seams and tags of the mattress. They can also be found in the seams of chairs and couches, between cushions, in the folds of curtains or in drawer joints.
According to the American Journal of Medicine, some individuals experience psychological sequelae which is a result from bed bug bites.
These psychological disorders could include either nightmares, flashbacks, hyper vigilance, insomnia, anxiety, avoidance behaviours and personal dysfunction.
A 2012 study looked at 135 postings on online blogs and other internet sites where bed bug postings occurred to look for evidence of emotional trauma.
The postings were read and analysed and determined that a proportion of individuals who experience bed bug bites develop moderate-to-severe negative emotional symptoms after infestations.
Bed bug infestations and bed bug bites can cause both physical and psychological discomfort to people.
This results in sleeplessness and increased nervousness and anxiety, including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Delusory Parasitosis.
The best way to reduce or eliminate the psychological effects associated with a bed bug infestation is to engage in a plan for their elimination immediately and diligently carry out the plan.
For a person who is fearing about whether they may have bed bugs or not, there are a few ways to determine.
Symptoms that a person might have bed bugs include having a burning sensation, a raised itchy bump, small red bumps, reddish or brown dried stains on fabrics and white or clear skins, found on the bed which is shed by nymphs as they mature.
If you are bitten by bed bugs, the first step is to wash the affected areas with soap and warm water.
An ice pack can be used to reduce swelling and if you find the itching is extremely uncomfortable then you could use an antihistamine to fight the irritation.
Bedbugs enter homes undetected usually through luggage, clothing, used beds and couches and other items.
