It’s her job to stay across what’s happening in the sporting world, so who better to tap for insider intel than Mel McLaughlin? We caught up with the Channel 7 journalist to talk women in sport – and the names she wants us to watch out for. Cheering voices, at the ready!
1/ Britt Cox – Skiing
“The Winter Olympics is coming up in February next year. Britt was the youngest athlete at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010. She’s still very young – 22 now – but she’s had an incredible season in mogul skiing. She’s won heaps of events this year, including the World Cup and World Championships.”
2/ The Harvey Norman Jillaroos – Rugby League
“It’s the Women’s Rugby League World Cup in November. We know about [Australia’s national team] the Jillaroos, but I think we need to get behind them at that event because they’re amazing athletes. They were runners up for three world cups in a row, they won the last one and now this one’s in our own back yard. There are experienced players but also some new ones as well, so look out for them.”
(FYI, you can watch all the Jillaroos’ World Cup matches on Channel 7 this year, or attend games in Sydney and the final in Brisbane. Yew!)
3/ Sam Kerr – Soccer
“My favourite thing, soccer! Sam’s a Matilda [our national soccer team] and I think she’s a quiet achiever. She’s not necessarily high high profile but she’s just killing it. She’s killing it over in America as well, where she plays in the women’s league and scores spectacular goals. YouTube her bicycle kicks! She’s a brilliant athlete and doing extremely well.”
