Woman slammed for ‘inappropriate’ wedding outfit featuring a t-shirt

The most vital sartorial rule to follow at weddings is to avoid anything that could be potentially mistaken for a wedding dress – as it could steal the bride’s thunder.

That takes generally takes anything white or cream completely off the table, but there are some grey areas that can make the decision tricky.

One woman is terrified of being attacked by the "wedding fashion mafia" as she considers an unusual outfit for the bash that features two cream-coloured items.

She’s posted on Mumsnet to ask users whether her planned attire is "inappropriate or not" – and people were divided over it.

She wrote: "I need help, I don’t know if I’ve massively over thought this now or am I going to be hunted down and killed by the wedding fashion mafia?"

The woman explained that she planned to wear a suit to upcoming nuptials but decided to change it to checkered tapered trousers, a cream t-shirt and cream heels.

"I was happy with my look … then I read that you cannot wear, cream ivory or white to someone else’s wedding," she wrote.

"I would never dream of wearing a cream dress to someone else’s wedding but a tshirt will be ok surely?"

Some Mumsnet users assured the woman that people wouldn’t assume she was trying to steal the bride’s thunder by wearing a cream tee – but others slammed her for her outfit choice.

One wrote: "I personally don’t wear anything white or cream to weddings because there are so many other colours to choose from — it’s the bride’s privilege to wear white on the day, give her that respect."

Another said: "I wouldn’t wear t shirt to a wedding whatever the colour".

A third commented: "Neither of your outfits are wedding appropriate in my opinion."

Is wearing white or cream ever OK if you’re not the bride? Let us know in the comments.
